  • Young Driver Fatalities in the state of Ohio,
    1991-2004


  • Two out of five deaths among teens in the United States are the result of a motor vehicle crash. CDC Injury Fact Book, 2002

  • The total annual cost of motor vehicle occupant-related deaths and injuries exceeds $11 billion for all children ages 14 and under. www.safekids.org

  • Rural areas have higher motor vehicle crash incidence rates and death rates than urban areas. www.safekids.org

  • From 1991 to 2004, a total of 1,073 young drivers were killed in auto crashes; 777 teens were killed on rural roads and 259 were killed on urban roads. AAA, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

  • 60 percent of crashes occur on roads with posted speed limits of 40 mph or less. www.safekids.org

  • In Ohio, there are more than seven million licensed drivers. Seven percent (537,000) are under the age of 21. In the U.S. in 2003, there were 38,252 fatal crashes. More than 8,000 of those crashes involved drivers between 15-20 years old. Ohio Department of Transportation
